"Characterization of Municipal Solid Waste in the United States
"This Environmental Fact Sheet is the latest publication in a series of publications describing the national waste stream based on data collected from 1960 through 1998. The historical perspective provided by the data is useful for establishing trends in types of municipal solid waste (MSW) generated and in the ways that MSW is managed. This year an environmental fact sheet summarizing the data and a set of background information tables was developed rather than a full report."

ECOLEX: A Gateway to Environmental Law
"...designed to use IUCN's Environmental Law Information System (ELIS) as its core archival system and link this data to full text information available with UNEP's Computerised Environmental Law Information Base (CELIB) and other authoritative sources...Users can search using subject area, keyword, country, or date. The list of subjects includes, for example: climate/atmosphere; fresh water; marine environment; soils; forests; biodiversity; energy; protected areas; hazardous substances; and wastes. ECOLEX includes information on multilateral treaties; national legislation; European Union instruments; international "soft law" and related documents; law and policy literature; and judicial decisions."

Environmental Sustainability Index (ESI)
"...is a measure of overall progress towards environmental sustainability, developed for 122 countries. The ESI scores are based upon a set of 22 core "indicators," each of which combines two to six variables for a total of 67 underlying variables. The ESI permits cross-national comparisons of environmental progress in a systematic and quantitative fashion. It represents a first step towards a more analytically driven approach to environmental decision making."

Tending the Commons: Folklife and Landscape in Southern West Virginia
"...incorporates 679 excerpts from original sound recordings and 1,256 photographs from the American Folklife Center's Coal River Folklife Project (1992-99) documenting traditional uses of the mountains in Southern West Virginia's Big Coal River Valley...The online collection includes extensive interviews on native forest species and the seasonal round of traditional harvesting...and documents community cultural events such as storytelling, baptisms in the river, cemetery customs, and the spring "ramp" feasts using the wild leek native to the region. Interpretive texts outline the social, historical, economic, environmental, and cultural contexts of community life, while a series of maps and a diagram depicting the seasonal round of community activities provide special access to collection materials
