Introduction to Mountain State University

Located in Beckley, West Virginia, Mountain State University established in 1933 as a community college called Beckley College. It stayed that way until 1991, when the school was renamed the College of West Virginia after achieving four-year college status.

In 2001, the school changed its name again to Mountain State University. Today, MSU caters to students in the region, as well as military service members and distance learning students who want to further their education. It has also opened up several satellite campuses in Martinsburg, West Virginia, Monaca, Pennsylvania and Altamonte Springs, Florida.

Student Life at Mountain State University

Over 8,000 students are enrolled at MSU, with the majority attending campus classes. The student-to-faculty ratio is small, with around 20 or 30 students to each teacher.

Students participate in various clubs and organizations around campus. Mountain State competes in Division I NAIA athletics as a member of the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
