Physician assistant degree programs take about two years to complete for full time students. Programs offer the option of a certificate, an associates, bachelor or master’s degree in the profession.

Many people attracted to this profession, already have a college degree and some health care experience. For example, many physician assistants come from the ranks of nurses, emergency medical technicians and paramedics.

What does a physician’s assistant do?


Physician Assistants (PAs) practice medicine while under the strict supervision of surgeons and doctors. (Note: This is different than medical assistants, who do routine clerical and clerical duties.)

PAs receive formal training to provide preventive healthcare services as directed by the supervising doctor. They take medical histories, examine and treat patients, order and interpret lab x-rays and tests and diagnose symptoms. PAs take care of minor injuries by splinting, suturing or casting.

In some places, they have managerial duties such as ordering supplies and equipment or even supervising technicians and medical assistants.

PA’s can also make house calls and check on the progress of patients in nursing homes or hospitals.

What kind of education does a physician assistant need?


When the prospective physician assistant decides to earn a certificate in one of the on-campus or online degree programs, the coursework will include:

• Biochemistry
• Human Anatomy
• Physiology
• Clinical Pharmacology
• Physical Diagnosis
• Medical Ethics

The student can select and receive supervised training in one of a variety of areas. These include family medicine, internal medicine, prenatal care, emergency care, surgery, gynecology, geriatrics and pediatrics.

Every state requires physician assistants to pass the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination. To remain certified, PAs have to complete 100 hours of continuing medical education every two years and recertify every six years.

Bureau of Labor Statistics suggest that median annual salaries for a physician assistants are at around $81,230.

Physicians, hospitals and clinics are expected to use more PAs to provide primary care and assist as members of a health care team. Opportunities are available in hospitals, prisons, academic medical centers and public clinics
