To become a physical therapist an on-campus or online degree in physical therapy at the master’s level is a requirement. Master’s degree programs in the field take about two to two and a half years to complete.

What does a physical therapist do?
Physical therapists (PTs) diagnose and treat individuals of all ages who have medical or health related issues that limit their abilities to move as they would like in their daily lives. PT’s use their knowledge of the anatomy to examine each individual and develop a plan to help their patients move, restore function and prevent disability.
The duties of physical therapists include working on the specific body areas that need it. For example, they handle back and neck injuries, knee and leg problems and upper and lower body issues. They use therapy on strains, fractures, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, spina bifida and sports and work related injuries.
The PT evaluates and diagnoses movement dysfunction. The treatment includes but is not limited to therapeutic exercise, manual therapy techniques, using assistive devices, and electrotherapeutic modalities
Often, therapists will consult with other professionals such as doctors, nurses and other therapists to make sure they select the appropriate treatment for the patient.
What kind of education does a physical therapist need?
The Commission on Accreditation of Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) accredits physical therapy degree programs. The programs include courses in biology, anatomy, physiology, exercise physiology, neuroscience, biomechanics, pharmacology, pathology and radiology.
Behavioral science courses like clinical reasoning will also be required. Clinically based coursework includes medical screening, the diagnostic process, therapeutic interventions and practice management.
At the undergraduate level, the prospective physical therapist will want to take courses in anatomy, biology, chemistry, physics and math.
How much does a physical therapist earn?
Bureau of Labor Statistics suggest that median annual salaries for physical therapists are at around $72,790.
Where can a physical therapist work?
Physical therapists work in hospitals and in healthcare offices complementing the work of other healthcare practitioners. Other places for PTs to work are rehab centers, nursing homes, home healthcare agencies, adult daycare programs and schools.
