What does a dental hygienist do?
Dental hygienists remove soft and hard deposits from teeth. They teach their patients the practice of good dental hygiene. They perform examinations on the teeth and gums of their patients.
One of the responsibilities dental hygienists have is to know the tools of the dental trade. These include hand and machine instruments, ultrasonic machines for cleaning and polishing teeth and x-ray machines. In addition to preparing the patient and taking the x-ray pictures, they sometimes develop the film.
In some states, hygienists can administer anesthetics, place and carve filling materials, remove sutures and polish metal restorations.
