Consider obtaining an online degree in business with a marketing emphasis if you want to become a sales director. If you decide to make a sales career in a technical field such as electronic components or computer hardware, a bachelors degree in science or engineering with a master’s in business is preferred.

What does a sales director do?


The path to becoming a sales director is often preceded by a position as a sales rep while on a career path in sales.
As a sales director, you no longer sell. Instead you’re responsible for directing the sales staff in distributing the product or service to the customers. Your duties will include assigning sales territories, setting sales goals and making sure the sales representatives are trained about the products they’re selling.

Another important duty for sales directors is to keep their sales people motivated. The director has to figure out ways to improve the performance of the sales staff. However, if you work in a large firm, you might have several regional sales managers reporting to you that you’ll oversee.

You will also stay connected to dealers and distributors, analyze sales data, monitor inventory requirements and customer preferences.

Every once in awhile, you may have to hold a sales contest to move product!

The best education for a sales manager is an on campus or online degree in business with a marketing emphasis. This well rounded education will include courses in:

What’s probably more important than education is the ability to connect with other human beings so that they will first, show an interest in and second, purchase your product. It takes a good communicator to do that effectively.

A career in sales can be initiated at any company since all firms need sales to survive and thrive. However, sales director positions are usually found at larger companies where they can afford the infrastructure.
