In an effort led by the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers, 49 states have agreed to form a Common Standards Initiative designed to develop a common core of state standards in English-language arts and mathematics for grades K-12.
Announcing the move, U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan said, “This is the beginning of a new day for education in our country. A lot of hard work is ahead of us, but this is a huge step in a direction that would have been unimaginable just a year or two ago.”
In all states taking part in the initiative, both the governor and the chief education officer have signed a memorandum of agreement committing their respective states to the development of voluntary, common standards.
Arne Duncan summed up the proposal by calling it “a giant first step in the right direction.”
