President Obama has taken steps to ease the financial burden felt by college students by cutting out the involvement of banks as middle men and will lead to larger payouts for those students that qualify for grants, such as the Pell Grant federal aid.
“The cost of college continues to go up and support for student aid has not kept pace,” said, Robert Brandon, the director of the campaign for College Affordability.
“The nation’s social and economic health relies on the number of student who can attain a college degree,” Christine Lindstrom, the director of the U.S. Public Interest Research Group Higher Education Program added. Obama’s proposal would see the number of federal grants available to low-income students rise.
In Michigan, there would be an additional 9,172 recipients. In California, an additional 30,000 college students would benefit. In New Jersey, the average Pell grant under Obama’s proposed changes would see a $125 increase.
The 2009-10 budget increases are expected to increase the maximum Pell Grant per student from $4,731 to $5,350.
